Lebanon’s leading wineries took to New York’s Astor Center on the 17th of November for the first Lebanese Wine Day to be held in the US.
Organized by Lebanon’s Ministry of Agriculture, managed by Hospitality Services and in collaboration with ilili restaurant, 25 of Lebanon’s wineries were brought to the forefront in an event aimed at elevating the profile of the country’s unique wines. Participants included Adyar, Atibaia, Aurora Winery, Batroun Mountains, Cave Kouroum, Château Barka (vignaverde), Château Belle-Vue, Château Fakra, Château Heritage (ETTS), Château Ka, Château Kefraya, Château Khoury, Château Ksara, Château Marsyas, Château Musar, Château Nakad, Château Oumsiyat, Château Qanafar, Château Sanctus, Château St. Thomas, Domaine de Baal, Domaine des Tourelles, Domaine Wardy, Ixsir and Karam Wines.
A press conference kicked of the proceedings, where speeches were delivered by Mr. Majdi Ramadan, Consul General of Lebanon to New York, Mr. Zafer Chaoui, President of the Union Vinicole Du Liban, H.E. Ambassador Dona Turk, Director of Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Lebanon, Mr. Louis Lahoud, Director General of Agriculture and Mrs. Randa Dammous-Pharaon, representing Hospitality Services. A common message conveyed by all members of the Lebanese delegation was the importance of recognizing Lebanon’s exceptional wine heritage, dating back thousands of years and the growing interest in the country’s wine in the international arena.
More than 350 trade professionals and Lebanese diasporans attended the full-day event, which comprised walk-around tasting sessions and exclusive master classes with Master of Wine, Ms. Christy Canterbury. The participating wineries were given a rare opportunity to network with potential US distributors, and it is hoped that more Lebanese wines will find themselves available on the US market as a result of the Lebanese Wine Day.
This triumph in New York, which follows two previous Wine Days in Paris (2013) and Berlin (2014), has set the wheels in motion for a fourth event next year, forecast to take place in Moscow.
